David Maraghy (for complete resume click here) is a sports attorney with more than 20 years in the sports business (Williams College '74 and Wake Forest University School of Law '77). Dave received his start in sports serving as the General Chairman of the PGA TOUR Tournament, the1986 Greater Greensboro Open (GGO), which realized that year a record profit for charity in excess of $600,000. Presently he is the CEO of Sports Management International, Inc. (SMI), a Richmond-based professional sports management and marketing firm, specializing in golf.

Following the GGO Dave went on to manage the affairs of such PGA TOUR stars as Tom Kite, Lanny Wadkins, Davis Love, III and Justin Leonard. He also continued to excel in the area of event management, overseeing the Virginia State Open, and its television broadcast, the only event of its kind in the United States with live television. Dave also created the CROWN ROYAL Golf Championship, a televised event reaching over 10 million households which draws players from across the United States, Canada and as far away as South Africa.

Dave has also created and managed golf events around the world. He was the driving force behind the 1995 Hyundai Motor Golf Classic in Seoul, for which he brought to Korea for the first time such PGA TOUR stars as John Daly, Curtis Strange, Craig Stadler and Justin Leonard. He also packaged that event for ESPN. The following year Dave returned to Korea for the Ssang Yong Securities Challenge where he brought Tom Watson, Corey Pavin, Sandy Lyle and Sam Torrance.

In 1993 he created the Fantasy Golf Camp in Las Vegas where the biggest stars in golf — John Daly, Payne Stewart, Peter Jacobsen, Lanny Wadkins, Curtis Strange and Davis Love — spent days with lucky amateurs on the links and nights on the town. Right here in Richmond he ran the 1996 Pepsi LPGA Skins Challenge featuring stars Meg Mallon, Michelle McGann, Donna Andrews and Beth Daniel.

In 1999, Dave co-founded the VCU SportsCenter at Virginia Commonwealth University, a unique graduate program offering a Master's Degree in Sport Leadership. He served as Executive Director of that program until 2002 when he returned full-time to the world of sports.

Dave's company, SMI Productions, produces the live television broadcast of the SunTrust State Open of Virginia. The Tournament will air live on ABC affiliates in Richmond and across the State, and on cable to 10 million households from the Mid-Atlantic down through Florida and throughout the Southeast.
